Root canal

Our experienced dentists understand that root canal treatment can sometimes be a little daunting. Please be assured, our aim is to make you feel comfortable during treatment.

If you are particularly nervous about treatment, you may wish to consider dental sedation as part of your treatment plan. To learn more about root canal treatment or to book a consultation to discuss the option please contact us.

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal, or RCT, involves cleaning and shaping the pulp space within a tooth. It is often required when a tooth has become infected following tooth decay or a crack.

How long will the treatment take?

This will depend on the condition of the tooth and the symptoms you are experiencing. It may be possible to complete the root canal treatment in one visit but it often requires 2 visits to finalise. This is to ensure the root of the tooth is fully cleaned before we fill it up.

Will I need a crown after my root canal?

This will depend on the position of your tooth and if the tooth has any existing fillings. Generally, we will advise that back teeth should be crowned to offer support and prevent catastrophic fracture of the brittle structure. Your dentist will advise you of this before they begin the treatment, you can then make an informed choice.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

Often you will get ongoing symptoms with a tooth including pain, swelling or draining infections. Sometimes, you are unaware a tooth requires a root canal treatment, it may be picked up on an x-ray taken by our team. If you are unsure or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Fillings

At Alderley Edge Dental, our aim is to focus on prevention and avoid the need for dental fillings. However, there are times when fillings are required to save a tooth or restore its function. Regular dental examinations allow us to detect a problem with your tooth before you know anything is wrong. Dental fillings are used to repair teeth which have broken due to fracture or to remove decay inside the tooth. Your clinical will gently numb the area so you wont feel anything during the procedure. We can then clean the tooth and remove any decay before a new filling is moulded into place. If you are worried or anxious about dental treatment, please let us know as we may be able to offer you sedation as part of your treatment plan. Dental care to make you smile!

Crowns

At Alderley Edge Dental, our aim is to prevent a decayed or broken tooth. But, we understand that broken down or injured teeth can sometimes require a crown or only for protection. Often an old filling can deteriorate beyond repair and the only option is a crown. We also recommend crowns for back teeth which have had a root canal treatment, this is to provide function and prevent future catastrophic failure of the brittle tooth structure. If you think your tooth may benefit from a crown, book in for an examination and our friendly dentists will advise you. Dental care to make you smile!
